In a remarkable display of unity and collaboration, President William Ruto of Kenya, known for his close ties with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, recently engaged in discussions at Museveni’s farm in Kisozi. What made this meeting even more noteworthy was the presence of Kenya’s opposition leader, Raila Odinga, signifying a crucial step towards regional peace and stability.
The London Political Summit and Awards expressed immense delight at the improved relationship between President Ruto and Rt. Hon. Odinga, emphasizing their shared commitment to internal and regional peace for the greater good of Kenya, Uganda, and the East of Africa. According to reports, the tripartite meeting aimed to address pressing issues between Kenya and Uganda, particularly the longstanding oil dispute that has strained their economic relationship. The leaders also tackled matters such as the conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mr. Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission chairperson seat, and sought Uganda’s assistance in uniting the divided East African Community (EAC).
President Museveni, in a statement, highlighted discussions on mutual interests and the broader issues facing the East African Community. President Ruto, responding to the discussions, stated, “We have agreed on a way forward of sourcing and scheduling imports for the region in a manner that will ensure we achieve the most competitive pricing and maximum logistical efficiency.”
Addressing the ongoing oil dispute between Kenya and Uganda, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening diplomatic and economic ties, emphasizing the goal of forming the East African Political Federation. Since the dispute began in 2023, Uganda has accused Kenya of negatively impacting the energy market in the region, leading to a shift in oil imports from Kenyan ports to the Dar es Salaam port in Tanzania.
