A UK councillor, Glenn Gibbins (66), has been charged under the Communications Act 2003 over an alleged 2024 social media post in which he reportedly stated that Nigerians should be “melted down and used to fill potholes.” The matter is now before the courts, and due legal process will determine the outcome. It is important to remember that a criminal charge is not a finding of guilt.
Whatever the outcome of the case, this incident is a timely reminder that words matter. Public office carries a responsibility to promote respectful and inclusive dialogue, not language that may inflame prejudice or division.
