In the 21st century, democratic elections and Peaceful transition of power and the will to maintain law and order in situation surrounding post elections continues to play a pivotal role. Multilateral institutions and state actors including the civil society have continuously advocate for genuine peace around the globe. Despite peace and order taking center stage, it should stick in minds that the world is facing several pressing issues, such as the pandemic, climate change, disarmament, genetic engineering, artificial intelligence, terrorism, national security, identity, and sovereignty, further underline the need for domestic and national political focus.
It is on this background that the London Political Summit and Awards (LPSA) in 2020 recognized Malawi leader, His Excellency, President Lazarus Chakwera with the Raila – Uhuru Peace Accord for a democratic and peaceful transition of power and extending a hand of brotherhood to the outgoing president. The award symbolizes the admiration and appreciation of the international community for his dedication to promoting peace, rule of law and stability in his country The president was named as African President of the Year 2020 but because of COVID restrictions which included travel bans, LPSA was unable to officially present the award.
During president Chakwera’s recent trip to the UK, one of the LPSA Directors, Allan Mandindi had the opportunity of presenting the award to him, symbolizing the admiration and appreciation of the international community for his dedication to the promotion of peace and stability in his country. Among others, Chakwera got a special recognition for managing several pressing issues highlighting the importance of both domestic and national politics.
The London Political Summit and Awards further recognized issues related to the identity and sovereignty which underscores the significance of multi-cultural and national values. Providing an X-ray to the Malawi Daily Telegraph about Chakwera’s recognition one of the London Political Summit and Awards Directors, Allan Mandindi said this is an important accolade known as the Raila-Uhuru African Peace Accord Award which was bestowed upon His Excellency, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, the President of The Republic of Malawi.
“The presentation took place during President Chakwera’s official visit to London for the Kings’ Coronation in May. The Raila-Uhuru African Peace Accord Award was specifically designed to honor outstanding African leaders, and President Chakwera was chosen as the African President of the Year 2020 due to his noteworthy contributions and pivotal role in upholding democratic principles and maintaining political stability within Malawi,” Mandindi said
Mandindi who is a scholar of Political Science pointed out that the recognition serves as a testament to President Chakwera’s remarkable efforts and achievements in fostering a democratic environment and ensuring political harmony in Malawi.
